Martha’s Vineyard Island is in the south of Cape Cod in New England. It was often named as The Vineyard. It is the 58th Largest Island of the United States and the 3rd Largest Island on the East Coast of the U.S. In addition, it is not connected to the mainland by any tunnel or bridge.
The Vineyard is located in Dukes County, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This was the home of the earliest known deaf communities of the United States. That’s why, a special sign language called Martha’s Vineyard Sign Language (MVSL) got developed here. If you are planning to visit this island then following are its best locations: -
Tisbury – The Port of Entry
The first step of almost every visitor in Martha’s Vineyard will be in Vineyard Haven. Being the main port entry for the Steamship Authority ferries, it is also called Tisbury. The natural treasure of Tisbury is its Harbor protected with two promontories called East Chop and West Chop.
Oak Buffs – The First Resort
At this place, there was a town called Oak Buffs in 1830. Now, the Methodist congregations from all parts of New England used to gather at Woods North of Edgartown for summer retreats. Most of the visitors found this delightful and refreshing.
Edgartown – The Whaling Center
Edgartown is the parent community of the Oak Bluffs and it is the Vineyard’s toniest town. This was the World Whaling Trade Center in the 1800s. Formidable mansions created by ship owners and whaling captains are now testifying the wealth of that era.
West Tisbury – The Athens of Agriculture
The West Tisbury is the best known for its agricultural and rural heritage. This is located on the west of Edgartown. It is home of fairgrounds of MVAS (Martha’s Vineyard Agricultural Society). The livestock show and annual fair are held here in the month of August every year. Do not miss it if you are going to visit The Vineyard Island.
Chilmark – The Rural Enclave
Chilmark is on the west of West Tisbury and is devoted to sheep farming. It has the vast expanses of the open island landscape. There are two important centers of this town: - one is BeetleBung Corner for town hall, school, and library. Other is Menemsha, a fishing village representing the old culture of New England Character.
Aquinnah – The Town of Two Nations
Aquinnah is on southwestern tip of Martha’s Vineyard Island. Till 1998, this community is called as Gay Head. The word Aquinnah means the land under the cliffs.
