Kensington Palace is located in the Kensington Gardens, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in London. This is a residential place of British Monarchy Royal Family since 17th Century. It was the official residence of the world-famous Princes of Wales – Diana till her death in 1997, Princess Margaret till her death in 2002 and Princes Alice till her death in 2004.
Who is residing now at Kensington Palace?
Currently, it is an official residence of The Prince & The Princess Michael of Kent, The Duke & The Duchess of Kent, and The Duke & The Duchess of Gloucester. In addition Prince Harry along with his cousin Zara Phillips uses it as their unofficial residence.
Who manages the Palace?
Only the State Rooms are open for the public and they managed by a non-profit organization called Historic Royal Palaces. Other private and official accommodation areas are the responsibility of Royal Household.
A Look into the History
The Kensington Palace was originally built up as Nottingham House for the Earl of Nottingham in 17th Century in the Kensington Village. His legal heir, Secretary of State for William III acquired it in 1689. The King was an asthmatic patient and needed a presidential palace outside but near London due to its smoky environment. The Kensington Village was located outside London at that time and was more accessible than Hampton Court. The King shifted to Kensington Palace and a road was built from it to Hyde Park Corner, today this road was a part of Rotten Row.
Sir Christopher Wren extended and revamped the Kensington Palace with
- pavilions attached to the each corner of central block,
- Chapel Royal,
- a Council Chamber,
Wren also re-oriented the house to face West; built South and North wings to flank the approach, and made in a proper cour d’honneur entering into an archway surmounted by a Clock Tower. As it was a private complex, this was referred as Kensington House instead of Palace. The walled Kitchen Gardens of Kensington House used to supply vegetables and fruits for the Court of St. James’s.
